Records, Rebounds, and Seats, OH MY!

History will record April and May 2020 as the two slowest passenger traffic months in airport history. However, passengers and flights are returning to HIA this summer.

April 2020 passenger traffic declined by 96% when compared to April 2019 as airlines reduced flight schedules and practically all non-essential business and leisure traffic nationwide came to a halt due to impacts related to the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak.  HIA’s passenger traffic low point occurred on April 6th, as the airlines served just 4% of 2019’s same day traffic.  Since then, traffic has steadily increased on a weekly basis.  May passenger traffic is expected to be double April’s, and as of yesterday, HIA served 21% of 2019’s same day traffic—higher then the 15% average nationwide.

In July, our airline partners will offer 82 percent more seats for sale than they are in June.

American Airlines will resume daily nonstop service to Dallas Ft. Worth on large 126-seat Airbus 319 aircraft beginning Wednesday, July 8th.  Airbus service also resumes to Charlotte and more flights are being added to Chicago and Philadelphia.

Delta will resume daily nonstop service to Atlanta on Friday, July 3rd and increase Detroit service to three flights a day.

United will increase service to two flights a day to Chicago and two a day to Washington DC, Dulles.

Allegiant will once again offer nonstop service to six markets – Orlando/Sanford, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Punta Gorda, Sarasota, Myrtle Beach and Nashville.

Frontier will continue to offer one flight a week to Orlando International Airport.

HIA and our partners have been working hard on new operational and cleaning procedures so we are ready to welcome you back as soon as you are ready to fly. #ItsOKtoVacay #AltogetherAgain
