Harrisburg International Airport Continues to Set Records

More people are flying to more places, more often from HIA. A record 134,337 passengers flew into and out of the airport in September 2025—breaking the September 2024 record by 1.9%. September marked the 7th consecutive monthly traffic record and the 20th consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

January through September 2025 traffic totaled 1,209,986—up 13.2% compared to the same period in 2024 and up 8.4% versus the previous nine-month record set in 2019.

All five airlines have increased traffic from Harrisburg in 2025:

A Record Fourth Quarter and Calendar Year

With nearly 500,000 seats for sale to and from HIA during the fourth quarter of 2025—an increase of 17% compared to October, November, and December 2024—passenger traffic for the 2025 calendar year is expected to top 1.6 million, easily breaking the 2019 record of 1,512,585.

Through July, Orlando, Chicago, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Charlotte were the most popular U.S. destinations from Harrisburg (all served nonstop), while London, Cancun, San Juan, Toronto, and Mexico City were the most popular international destinations from HIA.

Did you know? 8% of all HIA travel is to or from an international destination!

Air Cargo Volume Up as Holiday Shopping Season Approaches

A strong, diverse, and stable regional economy supported by a growing population has generated a 9% increase in air cargo volume at HIA through September 30. Earlier this year, FedEx added a third weekday flight to transport more locally produced cargo to and from domestic and international destinations. With the busy holiday shopping season approaching, FedEx and UPS will add flights on key shipping days to meet the region’s increased demand for high-value products and last-minute holiday deliveries.

When Booking Holiday Travel, Remember MDT!

While HIA’s official airline booking code is MDT—which stands for Middletown, PA, where the airport is physically located—don’t forget that MDT also stands for Money, Distance, and Time.

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday travel seasons approach, remember to calculate the total cost of your trip when comparing airfares. In addition to the ticket price, consider the additional expenses of driving hours each way to a faraway airport:

  • Turnpike tolls
  • Higher daily parking fees
  • Increased gas costs
  • An expensive hotel stay with “free” parking
  • Most importantly, your time

If you’re driving past HIA/MDT to save money on an airfare, make sure you’re actually saving money. Often, the additional costs exceed what you’re saving on fares. And when you land at another airport at 11:00 p.m. with a two- or three-hour drive home, was it really worth saving $100?
