Please Pardon Our Dust – We’re Enhancing Your All Together Better Airport Experience!

When the “new” HIA terminal complex opened two decades ago, it quickly became known for its convenience, cleanliness, and ease of use.  Over the years, our team has worked hard to keep the facility as close to “opening day fresh” as possible.

As HIA continues to experience significant passenger traffic growth, strategic investments are needed so you continue to have a great airport experience.  The projects are being managed to provide as little disruption to normal operations as possible.

Improved Food and Beverage Options

As of April 1st, HMS Host opened Crafted Harrisburg and Great American Bagel, bringing even more food and drink choices to travelers and employees alike.

Here’s what else is on the horizon for 2025:

  • Starbucks is temporarily closed for a six-week remodel and will reopen in mid-May.
  • Once Starbucks reopens, Phillip’s Seafood will close for a 90-day transformation into the Yuengling-themed 1829 Bar and Grill.
  • This fall, the Capital Café will temporarily close for renovations.
  • Auntie Anne’s will refresh its space early this summer.

By fall, all food and beverage locations at HIA will have been updated to offer a wider variety of choices for our guests.

A More Efficient Terminal Experience

Automated Exit Lane Coming in May

In May, HIA will install a dormakaba one-way automated exit lane to provide a fast and safe passage from the arrivals area of the terminal building the public meet and greet area near the TSA security checkpoint. Today, the open-air exit needs to be staffed all hours of the day by either TSA or airport security staff.  This new technology will allow these staff members to transition to other areas making your airport experience more efficient.

New Jet Bridges arriving in June

We’ll begin replacing six of our oldest jet bridges in June.  A jet bridge is the moveable walkway connecting the terminal building and your departing aircraft.  The new jet bridges will easier for airline staff to operate, be more energy efficient and will provide better heating and cooling to the attached aircraft.

New Restrooms

Later this summer the men’s and women’s rest rooms, and the companion care restrooms located just beyond the security checkpoint, will be closed for remolding.  New plumbing, countertops, fixtures, and energy efficient lighting will be installed.  Work on these restrooms is phase one of a multi-year effort to upgrade all restroom facilities in the airport.

New Escalators

The Airport Authority has awarded a contract to Otis to replace all eight escalators in the HIA terminal building, and from the SkyBridge, into the parking garage.  These new escalators will be more reliable, easer to maintain, and more energy efficient.

Parking Garage refurbishment

Last summer, Lobar Construction repaired and replaced all the double “T” concrete joints on the fourth floor of the parking garage.  The project also improved stormwater management efforts related to the garage.  This summer, similar joint replacement work will be done on the second and third levels.  The work will be phased to minimize disruption to parking garage operations.

New Crosswalks

A project to replace existing crosswalks and associated sidewalks will bring these areas up to today’s standards and will provide safe walking access between the hotel, parking garage and the terminal building.

This summer, in addition to increased passenger traffic, there will be significant work being done to enhance your travel experience.

Thank you for choosing HIA and we thank you for your patience.
