Record Holiday Travel Coming to HIA

Get Ready for the Busiest Holiday Travel Season Yet at Harrisburg International Airport

The 2024 holiday travel season is shaping up to be the busiest in years at Harrisburg International Airport (HIA). Between Friday, December 20th, and Friday, January 3rd, HIA expects approximately 63,400 passengers to fly into and out of the airport, marking a 13% increase compared to 2023. Whether you’re heading home for the holidays or welcoming loved ones, it’s important to plan ahead and follow key tips to make your journey smooth and stress-free.

This growth is driven by a 13% increase on the number of seats for sale compared to last year.  American has increased seats for sale to Chicago by 33% making it easier to get to the Windy City and to connect to more than 60 cities around the world.  American has also increase seats to their other hubs in Charlotte by 9%, Dallas/Ft. Worth by 9% and Philadelphia by 19%. 

HIA’s other airlines are growing as well with Delta increasing seats to Detroit by 58%.  United has increased service to Chicago by 9% while Allegiant offers new non-stop service to Jacksonville, and more seats for sale to Punta Gorda, Tampa, and Sarasota.  Frontier’s popular nonstop service Orlando service is back as well. 

Here’s what you need to know for record-setting travel at HIA this season:

1. Download Your Airline’s App Before You Travel

Airline apps can save you time and frustration when navigating the busy holiday season. Here’s why they’re essential:

  • Check in early: Use the app to check in for your flight 24 hours before departure.
  • Digital boarding passes: Download your boarding pass to the app (or print it at home as a backup).
  • Track your bags: Most airline apps allow you to follow your checked luggage throughout your journey.
  • Cashless transactions: Enter your credit card into the app, as airlines no longer accept cash.
  • Valid photo ID: Always ensure you have your ID on hand for check-in and security.

2. Know What to Pack and How to Pack It

Nothing slows down travel like unexpected packing issues. Use these tips to stay TSA-compliant and ready to go:

  • Visit TSA.gov: Familiarize yourself with packing rules and restrictions.
  • Follow baggage limits: Know your airline’s size and weight restrictions for checked and carry-on bags.
  • Weigh your luggage: Avoid last-minute surprises at the check-in counter.
  • Label your bags: Include your name, phone number, and email address on each piece of luggage.
  • Keep essentials close: Medications, car keys, and valuables belong in your carry-on, not your checked bags.
  • Dress comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and opt for sneakers instead of bulky shoes or boots.
  • Skip the gift wrap: Presents should remain unwrapped if they’re going through TSA checkpoints.

3. Arrive Early to Beat the Crowds

HIA is expecting particularly heavy travel during peak times. Arrive with plenty of time to spare, especially if you’re parking at the airport:

  • Parking Tips:
    • HIA Garage ($20/day): Arrive 90 minutes before departure.
    • HIA Long-Term Lot ($10/day): Arrive two hours before departure.
  • Checked Bags: Be sure to check in all luggage at least one hour before your scheduled flight.
  • Peak Hours: Busiest times are typically between 4:30 – 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, so plan accordingly.

4. Traveling with Children? Prepare Ahead!

Traveling with kids can be a challenge, but preparation can make all the difference. Here are some key tips:

  • Explain the process: Talk to children about what to expect at the airport and on the plane.
  • Entertainment essentials: Bring books, games, and other quiet activities to keep them occupied.

  • Wed. December 25 (Christmas Day): 2,654 passengers
  • Tue. January 1 (New Year’s Day): 3,298 passengers
