HIA Records Busiest Month Since Before the Pandemic

20,000 passengers expected over Labor Day Weekend

(Middletown, PA – August 30, 2023) – A total of 123,960 passengers passed through Harrisburg International Airport in July, the airport’s busiest month since early 2020.  A total of 739,983
passengers have passed through the airport through July 31st, up 2.2 percent vs the same period in 2022.

“The region’s strong demand for air travel plus more airline seats for sale generated more passengers in a single month since February 2020,” said Timothy J. Edwards, Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority executive director.  “Allegiant set a monthly passenger traffic record flying 30,777 people to the seven cities they serve.  While travel declines in late August and September as schools, colleges, and universities re-open, HIA traffic will remain strong as 2023 passengers should be two or three percent higher than in 2022.”

Labor Day Traffic up 6% vs 2022

Edwards expects nearly 20,000 passengers over the Labor Day weekend between Thursday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 4th.  Thursday, August 31st will be the busiest (4,600 passengers), followed by Friday, September 1st (4,300 passengers), and Monday, September 3rd (4,000 passengers).  2023 Labor Day traffic will be up six percent more than in 2022.

New roundabout open on Airport Drive

A new roundabout is almost complete along Airport Drive half-way between the terminal building and the Long-Term Parking Lot.  The roundabout slows traffic along Airport Drive, eliminates two intersections and increases access to the PA 193rd Air National Guard Base and the airport’s Air Cargo facilities.  The roundabout should be open for traffic in all directions by the end of October.
